Taija Pryor, Sophia Koltusky, Jenna M, Lauren E. Amy Maestri, in response to Stephen H. Webb's article, "How Soccer Is Ruining America: A Jeremiad", completely missed Webb's obvious tone of satire. In regards to Maestri's first refute of Webb's first argument; that feet are from the devil and hands are divine and from God. Webb was obviously being sarcastic when he says, "Do kids ever say, Trick or Treat, smell my hands" because that phrase is an alternation from a common childrens rhyme, used as a joke, rather than an attack on feet. Webb’s religious claims could have been taken seriously, however his use of improper grammar capitalization towards “God”, was an obvious sign of sarcasm, because if Webb was really a religious fanatic, he would have capitalized “he” and “him”, furthering the suggestion of satire throughout the article. In response to Webb’s claim that baseball is superior to soccer, Maestri states, ”argument of baseball being some sort of gladiator event is one of the worst and largest exaggerations I’ve ever heard and does nothing to prove your point against soccer,” which should have been an immediate indicator of Webb’s sarcasm. Additionally, if that didn’t suggest the satire-like tone of the article, Webb’s comment on, “ Buddhist monks on steroids,” should have. Maestri takes Webb’s comment of soccer being a girls sport to mean that it is demeaning towards girls, however, when Webb says that Soccer was “a display of nearly death-defying stamina,” he further increases the reputation of soccer’s difficulty, and the skill acquired to play the sport, boosting its reputation. These analogies exhibited the rhetorical comedy of the article, which only increased the irony of both articles. Although Maestri meant well, defending soccer, it might have been beneficial to actually finish reading the article, or perhaps pay attention before bashing an article that was clearly not meant to be offensive, but simply a sarcastic, humorous read. However, if there was anything Maestri did for the article, or the audience, it was provide a clearer point of view on the obvious satire of the article. Nonetheless, it can be inferred that many colleagues may find these pairing articles to be amusing to read and share with others to make them laugh. Appeal to tradition: occurs when it is assumed that something is better simply because it is older and follows tradition. Example- Marriage has traditionally been between a man and a woman; therefore, gay marriage is not allowed. Bandwagon: the threat to rejection from peers, caused someone to change their ideas and beliefs. Following the group. Example- in the crucible, mercy lewis claims Mary warren was trying to hurt them, so all of the other girls jump on te bandwagon and claim Mary is trying to hurt them. The girls follow the lead of mercy lewis and say marys trying to hurt her, conforming their beliefs to match Mercy's. Begging the question: premises include the claim that the conclusion if true or assume that the conclusion is true, circular reasoning.
